Banning Barbie3/9/2009
Recently, it has come to light that one lawmaker from West Virginia would like to ban Barbie. This is really nothing new, people getting upset about things that pertain to their children, even if they have no basis in reality. People have had issues with Sesame Street, Harry Potter, the like. It seems to be at a convenient time, being that they have recently introduced the tattoo Barbie. But again, nothing new. There was some lady years ago that got upset when her daughter thought Barbie was prettier than her. It is a little surprising to me that they haven’t actually sued the makers of men’s ties due to some of the content on them. I mean Simpson’s logos, playboy logos, etc. And they’re throwing a fit about Barbie. I actually had a friend who did a modeling gig dressed as Barbie. She was totally cute, well proportioned, probably about a size 6 at the time, so skinny, but not that skinny considering she was about 5’2. But apparently, they think that Barbie can influence girls to place too much importance on physical beauty. No, I would say that would be because of the media hype around women who are quite possibly anorexic, parents telling little girls that if they don’t look good they’ll never get married, mothers who used to tell their daughters they would never get married if they couldn’t cook, stuff like that. But no, that stuff couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it, parents couldn’t possibly have any influence on their prodigy, it must be these dinky little dolls, of which every major female celebrity has one, such as Oprah, who certainly isn’t that skinny! I mean I understand attacking Playboy to some degree. I don’t agree with it, but I understand it. I understand attacking things that would depict women as play things or things that don’t have to be smart as long as they’re beautiful. I understand banning men’s ties that depict certain things, such as porn for example(not that I’ve ever even heard of one of those). But there is a point at which parents are ultimately responsible for their own children, schools are ultimately responsible for proper education of youth, people are responsible instead of dolls being responsible for things that may go wrong. This whole thing with Barbie just seems like a bit of tyranny to me.
