For a long time, due to the lack of scientific rope test method, all kinds of rope accidents are taking place everyday all over the world, causing heavy loss of property and human lives. 

On May 25, 1995, the No. 9 cable on the Haiyin Bridge of Guangzhou City suddenly broke, causing a great loss of millions of dollars.

On Oct. 3, 1999, in the Maling Scenic Area in Guizhou Province, a broken cable on the ropeway caused a disastrous accident, in which 22 tourists lost their lives, the only survivor being a 2-year-old boy.   

On March 18, 2004, in an accident caused by broken hoist ropes in Tengzhou Dongda Coal Mine, Shandong Province, seven died and 4 seriously wounded.   

According to a survey made by a mining bureau of Sichuan Province on the freight ropeway accidents in a period of 15 years, the accidents caused by rope break take 16%, totaling 90 in all, causing 734 hours of outage, which is 24% of the total outage time.

Another survey made by Shanghai Bureau of port on the port accidents shows that 33% of the accidents are caused by broke wire ropes.

To ensure the safe operation of wire ropes, various kinds of safety management regulations have been made by the government, which stipulate that for devices such as hoisters, ropeways, elevators, hoisting machines and amusement facilities, the wire ropes must be inspected periodically using defectoscopes.
