Stained Glass and Its Origin

Stained glass has become a wonderful way for many people to express their views of the world through art. Artisans have been using glass to decorate buildings and other objects, including vases, for centuries. This unique form of expression has a varied history and if one is aware of it, they can better understand the basis for this enlightening and magnificent form of art.The beginning of the history of stained glass is a foggy one. Most likely the first colored glass was used in jewelry, cloisonné and mosaics. The most well known use has been in the churches across Europe. The Gothic cathedrals of the 1100s saw a mosaic form emerge to beautify the windows. One monk commissioned many to be made into mosaic pieces because he fully believed that the beautiful glass would uplift men's spirits and make them feel closer to God. Another thing that art glass was used for was to visually express passages from the Bible. Many people of ancient times could not read, so therefore the only way that they could understand the biblical word was through the use of pictures in the church or the spoken word of the priest. The beautiful leaded glass windows played a tremendous role in helping many learn Christianity.
During one of the highest periods that focused on art, the Renaissance, the unique art of stained glass was lost. The wonderful pieces that were found in the world's cathedrals were lost forever when they were replaced with painted glass. No longer could the glow of candles be seen through the beautiful windows. The beautiful art form was lost until almost three hundred years later. Then, artists such as Tiffany began revitalizing the wonderful stained glass art form and his work is still coveted in today's market.
Stained glass is one of the most beautiful forms of art that has stood the test of time. For those who know the precious stained glass art, the world is their canvas. Everything from the spoken word to the world of nature can be transformed into colored glass pieces for all to enjoy. No matter what its history, glass has proven that beauty can be found in even the tiniest grains of sand.
