8 Killed in Wrong-Way Crash in N.Y.

Eight people, including four children, were killed after three cars collided in the Mont Blanc Watches northbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway on Sunday afternoon in Mount Pleasant in Westchester County, the state police said. The parkway was closed in both directions for hours as investigators worked at the scene. A Ford Windstar minivan was traveling the wrong way — south in the northbound lanes of the Oris Watches parkway — when it crashed head-on into a Chevy Trailblazer at about 1:35 p.m., said Joe C. Becerra, an investigator with the state police. The minivan then hit another car, rolled down a hill and burst into flames. By the time the vehicle stopped, its passengers had been thrown to the ground. The minivan carried a woman driver, 36, four Rado Watches girls and one boy all between 2 and 9 years old, Mr. Becerra said. Three girls and the driver died at the crash scene. The fourth girl died at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. The boy, 5, was being treated there for head trauma and was in critical condition. The police were still trying to determine why the minivan was traveling in the wrong direction and at what speed, Mr. Becerra said. He said the police were hoping witnesses who might have seen the red Raymond Weil Watches Windstar just before the accident would come forward. Three men died in the Trailblazer — a father and his son, and another man. All three men died in the impact, said Mr. Becerra , who added that the police would not identify the victims until their family members had been notified. According to the Journal-News of Westchester County, the passengers in the minivan were from Long Island, and the Tag Heuer Watches three men were from Yonkers. Joe LaGrippo, the fire chief of the Hawthorne Fire Department, said his unit was the first on the scene after getting the call of a crash at 1:38 p.m. “We tried the best we could for the four children,” Mr. LaGrippo said in a telephone interview. “It was terrible. It’s not a good day in Hawthorne.” The third A Lange & Sohne Watches vehicle, a Chevy Tracker, was hit after the minivan lost control, Mr. Becerra said. The passengers of that vehicle, a man and a woman, suffered minor injuries and were treated at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow. The vehicles collided at the Route 117 exit on the parkway, Mr. LaGrippo said The crash was the second on the parkway on Sunday involving a vehicle traveling in the Piguet Watches wrong direction. Five people were injured in an accident hours earlier about 20 miles north of the fatal crash, Mr. Becerra said.
