Judging Sonia: Senate Confirmation Hearings Begin

Judge Sonia Sotomayor will face a tough grilling on traditionally polarizing social issues such as affirmative action, abortion, the IWC death penalty and gun rights this week as Republican senators seek to portray President Obama's first Supreme Court nominee as a radical activist. Although Republicans are spoiling for a fight, they're also facing the reality that Sotomayor, the first Hispanic nominee, comes with 17 years of experience as a federal judge and will be supported by a solid Democratic majority in the Senate. Barring a poor performance at her confirmation hearing or a last-minute revelation shedding new light on her record, court Jaeger LeCoultre watchers believe her confirmation is all but certain.
