Ajax Storage Tips9/17/2009

Self storage is a service that allows you to rent a unit wherein you can store things for a certain period of time. Ajax Storage units have become a popular option for businesses with surplus goods as well as for those that need storage space for old files and records. It is also an option for homeowners who are moving and needs temporary space to store their belongings while they set up their new house and for those who simply need extra space for other belongings.

There are a number of Ajax Storage units out there. It’s all a matter of picking the best facility. Once you’ve made your choice, you can pack and move your things in the unit. Here are some tips to help you do this efficiently.

Self Storage Packing

Packing is not about dumping your stuff into boxes. For self storage, you’ll need to put in some thought on how to pack your things since the primary advantage of using an Ajax Storage facility is that you should be able to use the space to your advantage yet have ease of access.

Here are some tips for packing and storage:

*  Label all boxes on each side for easy identification and keep an I nventory.

*  Use packing tape to seal your boxes properly.

*  Wipe metal objects with a little oil to avoid rusting while in storage.

*  Fill the boxes to their maximum capacity. Boxes that are partly filled may easily tip over or collapse.

*  Give your wood furniture protection by spraying furniture spray or placing a dust sheet over them.

*  For mirrors and framed pictures, wrap them in protective covering such as bubble wrap. Also never store them flat.

*  For clothes, it is best to buy a wardrobe or clothes boxes that allow you to simply hang the clothes.

*  Wrap all fragile and breakable items with paper or bubble wrap and pack them tightly in strong boxes. Fill all gaps with paper.

*  Do not store moist items in a self storage unit since they can cause the formation of mold and mildew.

*  Do not pack items into sealed plastic bags since humidity can cause mildew.

Organizing Your Storage Unit

There is one important thing you must remember while storing your things in an Ajax Storage unit. You need to make sure that you can easily access the items you store to avoid difficulty in the future when you need to get a particular item.

* Fill anything that’s hollow to maximize space. You can store smaller boxes or items in wardrobes, drawers, washing machines etc.

*  Keep the things you’re most likely to need right away at the front part of your unit.

*  Stack boxes and similarly sized items together to save space. Make sure that the heaviest boxes are kept at the bottom of the stack.

*  Always store the largest items first. The tall items should be stored vertically to maximize space.

*  You can save space by dismantling things that can be dismantled but make sure that you keep all the bits and pieces together.

*  Create a passage in the unit to make room for you to reach the back area.

Most self storage facilities offer extra services that can assist you in transferring your items to your units, for a certain fee.

Self Storage Restrictions

You can store almost anything in units – from small items that would fit in a walk-in closet to vehicles. The Ajax Storage industry is flexible but there are certain restrictions on some items. Here are the most common restrictions in the industry:

*  Inflammable Materials – These are restricted for obvious reasons. They can cause a fire and put not only your goods but also those of others, at great risk. For gas powered items such as lawn mowers or motor bikes, the fuel tanks are to be emptied before placing them in storage.

*  Perishable materials – Storing canned foods is fine but perishable foods are restricted because they attract bugs and vermin. Plus the odor and mess of handling spoiled foods is something no one would want to deal with.

*  Illegal and Stolen Goods – Any illegal or stolen goods will be reported immediately to authorities.

*  Animals or Plants – Putting animals in an enclosed, windowless space can result in prosecution. Basically, you cannot store your plants or any living thing in self storage. Animal products are also not barred from storage since they can also attract vermin.

*  Firearms – Some facilities may allow you to store firearms but there will be restrictions in the process of securing the item.

*  Jewelry – Not all self storage providers will allow the storage of valuables such as jewelry, coins and precious metals. Some might but   you would have to agree to restrictions and show proof of insurance.

*  Fragrances and Aerosols – Anything that will cause a significant odor on the facility is not allowed. Aerosols or pressurizes materials can burst and cause accidents.

*  Hazardous Materials – Most facilities does not allow storage of such material since the spilling of toxic or chemical materials on the site can cause extensive damage to the facility..

Every self storage facility has its own regulations so check your list of items with the manager. If you were caught storing prohibited materials, they may be confiscated or you may be asked to move your things out.
